Coach Gareth Southgate’s men had the duel firmly in hand from the start and after the break they took advantage of their dominance and scored goals. Marcus Rashford scored two, Phil Foden added one. It was the first game between the two teams at the WC.

Wales have reached the World Cup for only the second time in their history, but progressed from the group stage after three draws against Sweden 64 years ago. Now he took last place with one point.

Southgate has made four changes since the duel with the USA. Foden replaced Saka on the right wing, Rashford replaced Sterling on the other wing and Henderson and Walker also appeared in the starting line-up. Wales manager Page sent new James, Allen and goalkeeper Ward into the game from the start.

The English actively entered the “fight for Great Britain”, even if they only needed to not lose by four goals to progress. However, a possible victory secured them first place and a round of 16 encounter with second team from Group A, Senegal. Southgate’s men could have opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Kane slotted Rashford between the defenders but Ward caught him and ran out in time. England’s rule continued, they created many more dangerous situations, but they didn’t convert them. In the first half they sent a total of nine shots and two on Ward. Not one was aimed at Pickford.

In the second half Bale did not play again and was replaced by Johnson. The English did not alternate, but Foden and Rashford switched places on the flanks, both scoring in the following moments. First, in the 50th minute, the Manchester United forward, who opened the scoring from a direct kick, and two minutes later, the City full-back. Rashford won the ball on the right side, Kane sent a low cross into the box, and Foden had only one open goal in front of him – 0:2. The English were in a good mood and didn’t stop attacking even after two goals. In the 68th minute the Welshman again paid no attention to Rashford, brought on by substitute Phillips, and the 25-year-old striker rounded up his international goal tally to fifteen after a solo play. He didn’t add another one, because he was replaced by Grealish in the 75th minute. Wales managed just one shot on target in the second half and didn’t pose any problems for the favourites. In the 78th minute first Bellingham and then Foden could have added the fourth goal, but the first shot was taken by Ward and the second missed. In the end, Stones still had a great chance, but his attempt was blocked by the goalkeeper.

Votes after the game

Marcus Rashford, scorer of two goals for England: “It’s a good feeling. We were a bit disappointed after the result against the United States, we could have played much better. It was important for us to do better in the next match. Today we defended brilliantly and after the break it was almost the decider. as soon as possible. With the free kick I tried to keep calm and do what I’m trained for. I’m glad we’ve moved on to the next stage because I have big ambitions with this team and we can play even better than today.”

Gareth Southgatem England manager: “In the first half we controlled the game, but we didn’t create enough chances. We wanted to play faster in attack. When we scored those two goals, we knew we broke their will, it was a tough tournament for them. It’s great for Marcus , could have scored a hat-trick, showed what he can do with a free kick, after the first half I heard he and Foden didn’t see each other much so we swapped wings, they responded straight away and it’s great that they scored both of them”.

Daniel James, Wales winger: “We knew it was going to be tough. I don’t think we defended well but they can score from anything. Goals early in the second half broke us.”

Final table:

1. England 3 2 1 0 9:2 7*
2. USA 3 1 2 0 2:1 5*
3. Iran 3 1 0 2 4:7 3
4. Wales 3 0 1 2 1:6 1
* – advancement to the round of 16
