Freiburg’s pressure put MSV in trouble right from the start
MSV entered the game with the wind in favor of two wins in their last three games. But Duisburg did not show their strengths. Freiburg showed the best game system against Duisburg’s retained women.
The hosts came up a lot and played with full-backs. Fans at Dreisam Stadium saw many vertical balls descend. The MSV concentrated – with limited success – on initiating rapid counter-attacks.
Duisburg developed little pace because Freiburg’s pressing caused a lot of stress. In the 20th minute, for example, when Jana Vojtekova stole the ball from Eva Hilsenberg and forced MSV goalkeeper Kari Närdemann to forcefully save.
Zielinski shocked SC, strong support from Närdemann
Duisburg faltered, Freiburg missing more good chances for the home side to take the lead. The MSV had particular difficulty stopping attacks by the Freiburg women on the flanks. And he could also thank Närdemann for not conceding until half-time – and MSV even managed to go into the locker room ahead.
Because before that, Duisburg had achieved real success out of nothing in this phase of unending urgency of the SC. Vanessa Fürst paraded down the right wing, leapfrogged Samantha Steuerwald with her fantastic individual performance and hung up on the MSV Zielinski captaincy. This closed dry and caused a storm of jubilation.
Duisburg simply cannot withstand the pressure from Freiburg
Nothing changed in the conditions of play in the second half. Giovanna Hoffmann, completely lost by the MSV defense in area coverage, only hit the crossbar (56th).
But then it happened: Närdemann sailed under the ball from a corner, Xhemaili headed in for a deserved equaliser. Kayikci also headed in on a long ball from Steuerwald, but was sent off for alleged offside position (57′). Since there is no VAR in the women’s Bundesliga, this tense situation cannot be resolved forever.
But a little later luck was on Freiburg’s side: Xhemaili turned the game around in Freiburg’s favor with a goal at Wembley – in the TV pictures it looked like the ball hadn’t crossed the line yet, but referee Angelika Söder scored anyway . Minge landed a fantastic volley for a corner to wipe out any remaining doubts about Duisburg’s defeat before Kayikci scored the final point to make it 4-1.
