Frankfurt/Main/Wolfsburg (dpa/lni) – Coach Oliver Glasner from Eintracht Frankfurt is looking forward to seeing his ex-club VfL Wolfsburg again in the Bundesliga. “I would be lying if I said: This is a game like other games. I’ve had a total of two successful years there. That’s why this is a special game for me,” said the 47-year-old Austrian the day before the game ( Saturday, 3:30 p.m./Sky).
Glasner led VfL into the Champions League last season and then switched to Frankfurt because his relationship with Wolfsburg’s sports director Jörg Schmadtke was so strained. His months of silence about his future overshadowed the end of a successful collaboration in spring 2021. The fact that the Wolfsburg team got into a sporting crisis under both Mark van Bommel and Florian Kohfeldt after his departure further enhances Glasner’s work at the Volkswagen Club.
“You can only take your hat off to what he has achieved here with the team, especially last year,” said current VfL coach Kohfeldt. “He has already clearly left his mark in Frankfurt. That will be a challenge.”
Glasner also expects a difficult game on Saturday from a Frankfurt perspective. “Wolfsburg observed from a distance that there was a bit of a spirit of optimism after the win against Fürth. That’s why I expect a very aggressive Wolfsburg team that wants to step up their game and has a lot of quality in their ranks,” he said on Friday. “VfL Wolfsburg was in the Champions League and have strengthened their squad with millions. That’s why it’s a team that belongs in completely different regions of the table.”
Glasner also thought about Wolfsburg’s newcomer Max Kruse: “Actually, we didn’t want to say that. But we’re organizing a poker tournament and we hope he’ll be there. That would be our idea of how we can stop him,” said he.
