Frankfurt was also interested in the orientation of the similarly designed Champions League-Final round. However, Portugal’s capital Lisbon is now a favorite. The decision to host the two tournaments will be taken by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting on June 17 and 18.
Maybe NRW has an advantage
A possible scenario for the EuropeanLeague– The final round stipulates that the participating teams live in one place and the matches are played in different stadiums in the area. In this case, the application from NRW would have the advantage that all the venues are in one federal state with uniform and currently less strict hygiene rules. That would be different with the application of the Rhein-Main area with stadiums in Frankfurt (Hessen), Sinsheim (Baden-Württemberg) and Mainz (Rhineland-Palatinate).
In the Champions League are from the Bundesliga still Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, in Europe League Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg.
