The 10 billion mark fell last Thursday, deadline day in the world’s biggest leagues. This happened even though winter savings were the order of the day in England and only the leagues in France and Saudi Arabia set new spending records for the entire season.

Bundesliga, LaLiga & Serie A still far behind editions of 2019/20

However, savings were only made in England in January, when only 121 million euros were purchased due to the rules for profitability and sustainability (PSR) – in the summer of 2023 it was still 2.8 billion euros. In the 2023/24 season, the Premier League’s transfer spending of 2.91 billion euros is behind the transfer fees in 2022/23, when 3.1 billion euros were invested.

New spending record in the football world!

The situation is completely different in the Bundesliga (transfer expenditure: €834 million), Serie A (€996 million) and LaLiga (€535 million), because here they are sometimes miles away from the previous record values, all of which were in 2019 /20 were set up – the season before the corona pandemic. The biggest difference between spending before and after Covid can be seen in Spain, where 1.54 billion euros were purchased in 2019/20, and Italy, where 1.49 billion euros were spent on transfers at the time. The Bundesliga is now closer to its peak value of 971 million euros from 2019/20.

However, when comparing transfer income and expenses, the Bundesliga is also a long way from the situation in 2019/20: at that time, the league suffered a total transfer loss of 297 million euros on the transfer market – in 2023/24 it will be one Transfer plus of 227 million euros. The bottom line is that the Bundesliga is losing more quality than it is gaining.

The Saudi Pro League has gained a lot of quality this season. These cost the state-supported clubs 972 million euros in transfer fees, thereby showing that Saudi Arabia is now a serious player on the transfer market. The fact that Ligue 1 (€1.1 billion) has broken the billion euro mark for the first time and the Premier League is again scratching the €3 billion mark has ensured that 2023/24 will be worth over €10 billion in a season for the first time Player transfers were made.

Summer transfer window with the highest spending in football history

The development of transfer spending is similar to a share price. On the way to ever new heights, one record after another was broken before a major correction began. Due to the Covid pandemic, it went from 9.4 billion euros in 2019/20 to 5.7 billion euros in 2020/21; this value will be confirmed at 6.0 billion euros in 2021/22, before falling steeply again goes above. What the trend looks like for the near future should be clear, right?
