According to foreign media, there should have been a split in the US team during the championship, when coach Gregg Berhalter and 12 players wanted to send 20-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder Giovanni Reyna home. His efforts in training and in the pre-tournament match with Qatar’s Al Gharafa SC would have been insufficient. The player eventually apologized to his team and was allowed to stay.
Now he commented on the situation on his social networks. “I believe that what happens in the team should remain private. But a statement has been made that reflects on my professionalism and character, so I feel the need to comment on it,” she began.
He was said to have been told by the manager shortly before the championship that his role in the tournament would be very limited which devastated him. “Football is my life and I believe in my abilities. I play with pride and passion. I had high expectations and desperately wanted to contribute to the performance of a talented group as we tried to prove ourselves at the World Cup,” continued Reyna.
He admitted that being a very emotional person, he let his emotions get the better of him and it affected his performance in training even days after learning about his role. “I apologized to my team-mates and the coach about this and was told I was forgiven,” said the Bundesliga star.
However, he then shrugged off his disappointment and gave it his all for his performance on and off the pitch. Therefore, he is disappointed that he is still writing to himself about this matter. “I’m extremely surprised that anyone on the US men’s team staff could contribute to this,” he said, adding that coach Berhalter has always said that what goes on within the team will remain hidden from the public so the team can concentrate.
