There was a lot of applause from the stands for Dynamo Dresden – but the fans didn’t see their team’s goals. As expected, the victory in the test match against Borussia Dortmund went to the guests from the Bundesliga. BVB entered the Rudolf Harbig Stadium on Saturday with a very young team and won 2-0 (2-0). In front of 23,816 spectators, Mats Hummels and Antonios Papadopoulos (41st) scored the goals for the German runners-up in the 13th minute.
“The conversion of chances was our big shortcoming. We solved it well from behind and created a lot of chances. But – when you have so many chances, then one or the other ball has to go in,” summed up Dynamo coach Markus Anfang.
From the fans’ point of view, it’s always a problem with friendlies. You never really know what you’re going to get. Which player is used? Who is spared? Dortmund was a “top team in Germany”, Markus Beginning emphasized before the game. In principle, the statement is correct – but with a view to the cast of the guests from Dortmund, it was only partially correct on Saturday. Because the new coach Edin Terzic had brought a junior team led by Mats Hummels to the short trip to Florence on the Elbe.
Mats Hummels leads young team
In addition to the 2014 World Champion, Mahmoud Dahoud can probably have legitimate hopes of a place in BVB’s starting XI. Ex-Cottbuser Alexander Meyer was in goal. The rest of the team consisted mainly of perspective players. As announced, all newcomers such as Niklas Süle, Nils Schlotterbeck, Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt were missing. You only started training later because of your assignments in the national team.
And Dynamo Dresden? Coach Markus Anfang put significantly more personal cards on the table, as far as the start of the third division season in two weeks is concerned. Above all, the axis with goalkeeper Sven Müller, captain Tim Knipping in central defense and veteran striker Stefan Kutschke should also play an important role for the top favorites in the 3rd division in the coming months.
Kyu-Hyun Park, who was only loaned to Werder Bremen on Friday, started on the left in the back four. With Müller, Ahmet Arslan, Christian Joe Conteh, Dennis Borkowski and Kutschke, there were other newcomers in the starting XI.
Lots of chances for Dynamo Dresden
“We also want to play our own game a bit,” was the demand from Dynamo coach Markus Anfang. And the hosts managed that surprisingly well for long stretches of the first half. BVB goalkeeper Alexander Meyer had a lot of work to do. First he saved against Dennis Borkowski (15th), shortly afterwards against Stefan Kutschke (17th). However, it was the runners-up who scored the goals. Nevertheless, there was a lot of applause from the ranks at the break whistle.
In the second half, too, the spectators in the Harbig Stadium saw a largely open game. Dynamo tried hard, but still without scoring. In the 85th minute, Meyer again prevented the hosts from experiencing a sense of achievement when they headed the ball from Knipping.
