Football Success Stories and Relegation in Bad Soden-Salmünster-Mernes, Germany

Bad Soden-Salmünster-Mernes. The Spessart villages are separated by less than four kilometers. As close as the geographical proximity is, there are few political and sporting similarities. Marjoß is a district of the city of Steinau in the old Schlüchtern district and is located at the western tip of the eastern part of the Main-Kinzig district, while Mernes belongs to Bad Soden-Salmünster, has always been oriented towards Gelnhausen and is also at home there in terms of football.

The most recent success stories of the two football clubs ran parallel in the 2022/23 season. The SVM rose to second place in the A-League Schlüchtern, the FSV returned to the A-Liga Gelnhausen as B-League runner-up. After promotion, the teams completed the first half of the season with varying degrees of success. Marjoß has established itself in the middle of the table with a twelve point lead over the only relegation place, while Mernes is having a harder time in fourth from bottom. So while the SVM is well on the way to ensuring membership in the A league in the coming season, the FSV can play freely from now on, but will certainly strive to crown its last independent season with staying in the league.

The question of relegation in the A-League Gelnhausen is still open

District football manager Gerhard Pfeifer (Höchst) does not yet know to what extent the status of the Mernese team influences the question of relegation in the A-League Gelnhausen: “We still have to clarify how we are going to do this in the district football committee,” says Gelnhausen’s football director, who said on March 9th 23 years old, he will leave office and the business will be handed over to Christian Golditz from Salmünster.

The Mernese move to the Schlüchtern game operation should result in a situation from which everyone involved benefits. The ailing district of Schlüchtern is receiving a new lease of life, the clubs have been relieved of their worst existential fears, and at official level they are happy that “we from Gelnhausen can continue to contribute to strengthening Schlüchtern. Nothing is more important than supporting the continued existence of the game, which is why I am not angry about Mernes playing in Schlüchtern from now on,” emphasizes Pfeifer.

I’m not angry about Mernes playing in Schlüchtern from now on.

Gerhard Pfeifer, Gelnhausen district football manager

In any case, it seems as if Mernes is running into open doors, because in addition to the FSV, as Pfeifer reveals, you can also imagine SV Salmünster and even VfB Oberndorf in the Fulda region. So far there are two other Gelnhausen clubs, KSG Wüstwillenroth/Lichenroth and FC Burgjoß, that have – if any – overcome fears of contact with the East. The second team from KSG plays with the third team from Freiensteinau in the Schlüchtern C league, as do the Burgjoss reservists with Marjoß and Mernes in the Jossata lI reserve team. “We are very grateful for that, otherwise we would have had to manage a C league with 19 teams in Gelnhausen,” says Pfeifer.

Schlüchtern’s deputy district football manager Harald Maienschein raises the question of where SV Marjoß and FSV Mernes want to play with the second team next season: “If a corresponding application is made and approved, a right to start in the B league may be conceivable.” The fact that two first teams from Schlüchtern and Gelnhausen are joining forces is a novelty. Against the background of the decent quality and quantity of football, it was said that SVM and FSV can well imagine that in the long term there is more to it than the A league. The syndicate would possibly also unite the Paulowitsch brothers Kevin and Nick (Mernes) as well as Tim (Marjoß), although a confirmation from the always courted SVM defense ace is still pending.

Tom Lingenfelder’s era as Mernes coach ends

The fact that those responsible for the club have already entered into negotiations with a player-coach candidate with extensive group league experience and a B license from the ranks of VfB Oberndorf underlines on the one hand the seriousness of the ambitious undertaking, but on the other hand also means that an era is ending on both sides. On the Mernese side, Tom Lingenfelder has been responsible for the sporting fortunes of the FSV for many years, while the Marjosser rebirth after a departure from the game is closely linked to the name Andreas Ruppert, who led the SVM from the C to the B and now to the A-League led. “At board level the conclusion was that once a playing group had been formed, it made no sense to continue with one of the two coaches in a responsible position. I can understand that and support this decision,” says Ruppert, who has not yet decided what will happen next: “Maybe I will stay as a player. However, I’m 33, so the player-coach window isn’t exactly getting any bigger.”
