Being two meters tall and broadly built wasn’t enough when footballer Sebastian Vollmer went to the USA to play his sport at the age of 18: “I first had to gain 35 kilos,” says the most successful German in the US professional league NFL in conversation with the magazine Men’s Health. Today he can be seen on television as a football expert, as a keynote speaker on the topic of mindset and as a brand ambassador for the fitness chain FitX.

During his playing days, in which he won the Super Bowl twice with the New England Patriots, everything was subordinated to sport, including meals: “At 5 a.m. I would eat as many calories as possible, usually a shake with protein powder and peanut butter “, he describes. During the course of the day, between team meetings, football and strength training, “always consume a lot of calories, no matter what. After 16 hours we went home for dinner and then had something to eat soon afterwards so that the calorie balance was right.” Eating was something he had to stick to continuously and he still lost around ten kilos during the season. “At some point, eating is no longer fun; it’s more of a compulsion.”

After his career ended, it was the other way around: Instead of feeding his “fighting weight” of 150 kilos, he wanted to become slim and defined – and continued to eat in an extremely controlled manner. “I weighed every oatmeal and measured every movement,” he says in an interview Men’s Health. “I really had to relearn that eating isn’t just work, but that it’s also about enjoyment.”

The entire conversation appears in issue 11/2024 of Men’s Healthwhich are in stores today and at shop.motorpresse.de is available (also as an ePaper).
