Football star Alex Morgan announces his retirement

Los Angeles. Forward Alex Morgan, one of the most iconic players after winning two world titles and an Olympic gold with the United States, announced her retirement from professional football on Thursday at the age of 35.

“I’m going to get straight to the point, I’m leaving,” said the American at the beginning of a four-minute video that she posted on social media and in which she also announced her pregnancy with her second child.

“I am very clear about this decision and I am happy to finally be able to comment on it,” she said.

“The decision was not easy (…) Football has been a part of me for 30 years,” he recalled. “But at the beginning of 2024 I understood that this was my last season playing professional football.”

Along with other leading figures, such as the also retired Megan Rapinoe, Morgan was one of the great figures of the US team that won the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and the gold medal at the London Olympics in 2012.

She is also the fifth-highest scorer in the history of the United States national team with 123 goals after having played 224 matches.

Morgan’s retirement announcement also comes just as the United States, a world power in the women’s category, has begun a generational change. The forward was not even called up to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Morgan will say goodbye to fans on Sunday with one final game with his team, the San Diego Wave, against North Carolina FC.
