Toni Kroos, Antonio Rüdiger, Florian Wirtz and Mats Hummels have been nominated for this year’s Ballon d’Or. In the women’s category, German national players Lea Schüller, Giulia Gwinn and Sjoeke Nüsken made it onto the list. It is considered one of the most prestigious awards in football and is presented by the trade magazine France Football awarded – this year together with the European association UEFA.
The seven Germans are among 30 nominees for women and men. The Ballon d’Or for the best male and female footballers in the world will be awarded on October 28 in Paris. For the first time since 2003, neither last year’s winner Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo were considered this year.
International competition
In the men’s category, international stars such as Norway’s striker Erling Haaland, the English striker Harry Kane and the Spanish European champion Nico Williams are still on the list. In the women’s category, the Germans will have to prevail against last year’s winner Aitana Bonmatí from Spain, among others.
The Ballon d’Or has been awarded annually since 1956 by the trade magazine France Football Since this year, UEFA has been co-organizing the award. The Ballon d’Or is not a replacement for the World Footballer of the Year award, which is organized by the world football association FIFA.
