Football – New Manchester coach ten Hag: “Ronaldo is a giant” – Sport

Amsterdam (AP) – Manchester United’s new coach Erik ten Hag is counting on football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo staying.

“Ronaldo is a giant. I’m looking forward to working with him and I think he’s still very ambitious,” ten Hag told Dutch daily De Telegraaf, adding that he hopes the Portuguese striker will stay at Manchester. “Of course I want to keep him there. He’s been very important to Manchester United this year and has great stats.”

The 37-year-old Ronaldo, who still has a contract until the summer of 2023, had recently indicated his whereabouts. “I wish him the best and I believe we will win trophies next year,” the English Premier League club’s exceptional striker told ten Hag in an interview with the club.

Ten Hag said goodbye to Amsterdam on Monday, where he had been successful for more than four years. He wanted to start his job in Manchester on Tuesday, which is why he prematurely terminated his contract with Ajax, which actually ran until June 30th. “I’m changing very quickly, yes. But it’s really necessary because there are still a lot of things that need to be settled in preparation for the new season.”

Under ten Hag (52), Ajax Amsterdam won three national titles, including this season, and the cup twice. “It could hardly have gone better,” he said with satisfaction, “or I should have won the Champions League or the Europa League.”
