NBC has secured the rights to broadcast the Premier League in the United States for six new years, at a price tag of 2.7 billion dollars. It reports the news agency AP.
The sum corresponds to NOK 23.6 billion at today’s exchange rate. It is not far from tripling the price of the previous agreement.
The agency refers to an unnamed source who has been central in the negotiations. NBC has confirmed that the deal is in place, but will not say how much it costs.
NBC has had the rights since 2013, but growing interest meant that there was a fierce battle for the rights this time. CBS and ESPN submitted a joint bid, while Fox also participated in the bidding rounds. The latter has the US rights to the World Cup in 2022 and 2026.
The previous six-year deal with NBC cost $ 1 billion.
The new agreement applies to the seasons 2022-23 to 2027-28. NBC will broadcast all 380 matches each of the seasons, with both English- and Spanish-language broadcasts.
– We are delighted to announce our new agreement with NBC, which has been a fantastic partner for the Premier League the last nine seasons, says PL director Richare Masters in a statement on the league’s website.
– NBC has significantly increased the league’s popularity in the US through its fantastic coverage and promotion.
