Football Ligue 1 – L1: Canal + and BeInSports, the shame of European broadcasters?

Due to the end of the season, Canal + and beIN Sports are refusing to pay the last part of Ligue 1 TV rights for the time being, which is not the case in other European countries.

The bosses of Ligue 1 hold their breath. Because of the health crisis and the suspension of the season, Canal + and beIN Sports have decided to block the payment of April, estimated at 152 million euros in total, and it should therefore be the same in early June if the season does not start again. What put clubs in great danger. This is why four presidents, namely Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Jacques-Henri Eyraud, Olivier Sadran and Jean-Pierre Rivère were sent to negotiate with the encrypted channels. Suffice to say that the situation is tense. But what about the other main European championships? Unlike their French counterparts, foreign broadcasters show much more solidarity.

Take the example of England, where Sky Sports and BT Sports have taken the initiative to pay the full amount expected, ie 1.7 billion euros, while it is unclear whether the season will resume. As for Spain, broadcasters agreed to advance payment for March, which allowed clubs to collect 85% of the season’s TV rights. Italy could take a similar path since the broadcasters, who still have to pay 233 million euros, are currently in talks with the League. Finally, our colleagues from Bild inform us that Sky has reached an agreement with the Bundesliga for the payment of the last tranche estimated at 225 million euros. An example to follow for the L1 and its broadcasters, even if the fact that the LFP prefers Mediapro for the coming seasons obviously weighed in this situation.
