Panenk was diagnosed with Covid-19 last week and was taken to hospital for medical reasons.
“Now the tests have been negative, but he still has pneumonia. The doctors said he didn’t need to stay in the hospital and let him go home,” said the footballer’s son.
71-year-old Panenka made his name in the history of football in the final of the 1976 European Championships in Belgrade with a victorious post-match stroke against Czechoslovakia against West Germany.
A pass to the side pulled the defense out of position which let Zeps Maiers slip through on goal. This was Czechoslovakia’s first and only European champion title.
Many players have copied Panenka’s 11-meter shot technique, including Zinedin Zidane in the 2006 World Cup final, but this is a risk because the goalkeeper can stay in the middle of the goal and react to the shot.
Panenka also won two Austrian championships with the Vienna Rapid and is currently the Honorary President of the Bohemians.
