Sampdoria midfielder Harry Winks, on loan from Tottenham, admits he hasn’t been called up by anyone from Spurs in recent months and believes the Blucerchiati can still avoid relegation.
The England midfielder missed the early part of the season with an ankle injury but has become a regular starter under Dejan Stankovic in the second part of the campaign.
The Blucerchiati sit bottom of the Serie A table, tied on 12 points with Cremonese and 12 below 17th ranked Spezia who are just outside the relegation zone.
“I feel indebted to Sampdoria. If I had been available from the beginning, I would have given everything to help the team, but I don’t want to think that my presence would have been essential,” Winks told Gazzetta.
“This is a great team, regardless of what is going on.
“I’m sorry because the club has always supported me, on and off the field. It was important to solve my ankle problem. There are amazing people here, and so are the fans. There is a strong sense of love and I can only be grateful to the team. There have been many changes, but we have never lacked support. We will keep fighting, we can still make it.”
Sampdoria have a €25m option to make Winks’ transfer permanent in June, but the Blucerchiati are struggling financially and relegation to Serie B will likely make it impossible for them to sign the Englishman permanently. However, Winks doesn’t want to think about what will happen in the summer.
“I’m on loan until the end of the season, I’m satisfied with this experience, but I don’t know what the future holds for me and I don’t want to think about it,” he said.
“I can only focus on the next game, but I am proud to have made this decision. No one from Tottenham has contacted me, not even the manager. I was and am completely focused on Samp.”
The 27-year-old watched Spurs in their Champions League meetings with Milan and regrets not reaching the quarter-finals.
“Yes, it’s a shame because Tottenham could have won, but Milan defended very well.”
