Football: Ipswich Town back in the Premier League – after 22 years

Ipswich Town made the step up to the Championship last season and were aiming to establish themselves in England’s second-highest division.

When the league game was rounded off on Saturday, it was clear that Ipswich has managed to exceed all expectations.

With small funds and a celebrated coach by the name of Kieran McKenna, “The Tractor Boys” have secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time since the exit in 2001/2002.

“It’s a wonderful day”

With the victory over Huddersfield on Saturday (2-0), Ipswich has now succeeded in two consecutive promotions in the English league system and joins this season’s Championship winner Leicester in the Premier League 2024/2025.

– It is a wonderful day and I am very, very proud of everyone involved. It means a lot. To see how much this means to everyone, from the players to the supporters, is amazing,” coach Kieran McKenna told Sky Sports.

The last PL place is at stake in the playoff

It is the fifth time in the Premier League era that a team has achieved direct promotion from League One to the Championship and then to the Premier League.

Norwich now face Leeds while West Bromwich clash with Southampton in the battle for the final Premier League place in the play-off, which starts on May 12,
