Because of the threatening situation, Leki, who sits on the Presidium of the German Football Association (DFB) and the German Football League (DFL), is concerned about the continued existence of the 50 + 1 rule. The rule states that a club must always hold at least 50 percent plus one vote and donors must never be able to determine the fate of a club on their own. Opponents of the ghost games the league is currently aiming for should “be aware that stopping the game and the associated economic ramifications” would drive some clubs “into the arms of investors,” he said.
If the season was canceled, the Bundesliga TV funds in the millions were lost. For some teams it would be very difficult to cope financially. In connection with this, Leki demanded “to secure this rule with all consequences and any necessary adjustments in such a way that it would also stand up to legal review”.
