Freiburg (dpa) – Ex-coach Volker Finke hopes that coach Christian Streich, sports director Jochen Saier and sports director Klemens Hartenbach will lead SC Freiburg for many years to come. “I can only wish the club that this trio will remain in the sporting leadership for a long time,” said the 74-year-old of the German Press Agency. “The world of football has become a completely new one and yet SC has managed to remain true to itself. The people who work in sporting management were already there when I was there or were just joining,” says Finke , who coached the Bundesliga soccer club from 1991 to 2007.
“This continuity and the fact that Christian, Klemens and Jochen have known each other so well for so many years is the key to success,” said Finke. “The new stadium also improves the economic situation. It’s a symbol of the new level that the club has climbed. It’s not impossible that SC will have to play to stay in the league anyway. But the years of relegation battles will surely come fewer.”
Sixth in the league, Freiburg qualified for the Europa League this season. They will also play their first DFB Cup final against RB Leipzig on Saturday in Berlin. “I’m really happy for Christian,” said Finke about SC trainer Streich. “He’s developed really well. As far as I know, during the 2011/2012 winter break he hesitated about becoming a professional head coach and had the confidence to do so. In the meantime, he’s become the face of SC’s sporting success.”
