Israelis who received a third corona shot of the Pfizer vaccine appear to be significantly better protected against infection and serious illness than people who received two injections, according to research by vaccination experts commissioned by the Israeli Ministry of Health.
In people over sixty, protection was much higher from ten days after the third dose than after two doses. Israel began administering the third vaccination to people over 60 on July 30. This age group is particularly vulnerable to the coronavirus and was therefore the first to be vaccinated when the vaccination campaign began. Third doses are only given to people who received their second injection at least five months ago.
In more parts of the world, there is talk of a so-called booster vaccination. British research showed that the Pfizer vaccine works less well against the delta variant of the coronavirus than previously thought. A third corona jab in the winter may therefore be advisable, more and more experts say. The Health Council of the Netherlands will issue a recommendation next month.
Previously, the World Health Organization (WHO) advised against the third jab in rich countries, as long as there is still a shortage of vaccines worldwide.
