Football: End of the Champions League: we’ll know in mid-June – News Sports: Football

UEFA is expected to decide at its next executive committee meeting on 17-18 June on the format of the Champions League continuation and end, and the location of its final.

According to the press, the European body could envisage a tightened format with single matches on neutral ground starting from the quarter-finals, instead of the traditional round-trip format, perhaps by gathering the eight teams competing in the same city. .

When football stopped due to the epidemic in March, the Champions League was in the round of 16, with four teams already qualified for the quarters: Atlético Madrid, Atalanta Bergamo , RB Leipzig and Paris St-Germain.

Madrid wants the final

The mayor of Madrid José Luis Martinez-Almeida for his part said on Tuesday of a possible Madrid candidacy for the organization of the final of this Champions League 2020, showing his “total support” for this initiative, while the Spain was particularly grieved by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I know that there are steps in this direction and I wish, on behalf of the City Council, to express my total and absolute support so that the final of the Champions League can take place in the city of Madrid”, a declared the elected official at the microphone of the television channel “Trece”.

“This would show under the current circumstances the ability of Madrid to recover in a very short time from the dramatic situation we experienced,” he added, while Madrid is only in phase 2 of a four-step deconfinement plan. We have sufficient infrastructure and public services (…) and it would be a message to the world that Madrid is not giving up and is back. ”

Madrid was already the scene, on June 1, 2019, of the last final of the Champions League, won by Liverpool against Tottenham (2-0) at the Metropolitano de Atlético stadium. To date, Istanbul is still the city officially designated to host the C1 final, but the pandemic has changed the situation: the cities of Frankfurt, Lisbon and Moscow have been mentioned in the press as possible alternatives.
