The Volksparkstadion has to be modernized for the EM 2024. But there is a dispute between HSV and the city of Hamburg about the amount of the costs and further state participation.
The HSV now estimates the costs for the necessary measures according to NDR information at more than 20 million euros. A sum that the second division soccer team could not raise alone.
That’s why he hopes for further support from the city of Hamburg – and encounters a lack of understanding. State Councilor for Sport Christoph Holstein emphasized in an interview with NDR 90.3: “We are currently hearing very high sums that are required to modernize the stadium. But what you have to know is that, according to our calculation, the UEFA requirements are in a small, single-digit number millions are coming.”
For example, UEFA should only require a data room with cooling, emergency power for the floodlights and an additional ten turnstiles.
City of Hamburg helped HSV two years ago
The city suspects that HSV simply includes its own renovation requests that are independent of EM in the costs and prefers to have the city pay for them. However, Holstein clearly emphasized that there will be no more additional money from the city of Hamburg.
Two years ago, the second division club sold its stadium property to the city for 23.5 million euros and committed to using the money to finance the renovations for the 2024 European Championship.
Four preliminary round games and a quarter-final game in Hamburg
