Football Dominates American Sports Viewership: NFL, College Football, and More

Neither the Premiere League nor Formula 1 even comes close to the reach of the national sport. Even college football is doing much better.

German trade publications repeatedly report that a certain sport could soon take off in the United States of America. But that is not the case, because even established sports such as ice hockey, soccer or basketball are only marginal compared to football. So far, König Football’s reach continues to develop very positively.

NFL sports week kicked off with the game between the Bears and Commanders, which Amazon had an exclusive on Thursday. Around ten to 15 million Americans watch the “Thursday Night Football” games, although Prime Video does not provide any figures. The second London Game, played on Sunday between the Jaguars and the Bills, started at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time in the United States of America. The West Coast had to get up much earlier, but 5.128 million Americans still attended. CBS’ 4:25 p.m. games, Jets vs. Broncos and Chiefs vs. Vikings, garnered 21.942 million viewers.

After American television viewers had already seen eleven games, the NBC broadcaster started the twelfth game. That was played between the Cowboys and the 49ers and still had 18.482 million television viewers. Monday’s game between the Packers and the Raiders reached 17.375 million people on Disney. 9.163 million people tuned in on ABC, 7.176 million tuned in on ESPN and, in a special edition, 1.036 million people watched the broadcast on ESPN2.

Saturday was all about youth sports: the colleges played from 12 p.m. On ESPN, 2.335 million viewers watched the LSU-Missouri game, and at 8 p.m. 3.192 million watched Georgia-Kentucky. The 10:30 p.m. game USC – Arizona, which of course started on the West Coast, still reached 2.547 million viewers. At 8 p.m., Taxas Tech also played against Baylor in front of 0.481 million on ESPN2, NBC had 3.056 million viewers with Michigan against Minnesota. ABC broadcast Louisville – Notre Dame and secured 5.122 million viewers. Wyoming – Fresno State only attracted 0.737 million people to FOX, but Fox Sports1 still secured 0.480 million viewers with Iowa State – TCU.

German football officials like Uli Hoeneß and Hans-Joachim Watzke believe that the German Football League will bring a lot of money into its coffers through a corresponding deal with Apple or another American company. But football experts apparently don’t know that even the most popular football league in the world, the English Premier League, is doing poorly in the States. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, 0.512 million people watched Manchester United’s victory over Brentford. Formula 1, which had to compete against football on Sunday, also had a similar fate. Only 0.842 million people were interested in the ESPN broadcast.
