The tournament, which is to be played for the first time in its history in two countries, will take place from June 11 to July 11, 2021, the Conmebol said in its press release.
“This is an extraordinary measure for an unexpected situation, which therefore meets the fundamental need to avoid an exponential spread of the virus,” said the South American body.
The decision was taken in agreement with UEFA, which itself decided on Tuesday to postpone the Euro, initially scheduled for June-July 2020, until next year.
“We thank UEFA and its president Aleksander Čeferin for the common work and the coordinated decision to also postpone Euro 2020 for the sake of the whole football family,” said Conmebol.
As was to be the case for 2020, the two tournaments will be held on similar dates and South American players who play for European clubs will be able to participate in the Copa America.
