Football: China apologizes for hosting 2023 Asian Cup for this reason – Sports

Today, Saturday, China announced its withdrawal from the organization of the Asian Cup of Nations 2023, due to the epidemiological situation with the spread of the Corona virus.

The Asian Football Confederation said in a statement that it had been officially informed by the Chinese Football Association that the country would not be able to host the continental football event.

The federation added that the exceptional circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, led China to waive its hosting rights.

The AFC has confirmed that it is working closely with the CFA and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 during the preparations, and several milestones have been reached, including the launch of the tournament logo and the unveiling of the new Shanghai Pudong Stadium last year.

The federation said it appreciated the decision of the Chinese authorities and the tournament’s organizing committee, which is “extremely difficult”, stressing that China’s move is necessary for the collective interests of the Asian Cup 2023, who also provided time for the AFC. needed to assess the situation with regard to hosting the next edition.

The statement concluded: “AFC will continue to work closely with its business partners and stakeholders to chart the way forward, and will remain grateful for their understanding and support during this appropriate time.”

It should be noted that China received the honor of hosting the tournament on June 5, 2019, during the Extraordinary Conference of the Asian Football Confederation.

The 24-team competition was scheduled to take place in 10 Chinese cities, from June 16 to July 16, 2023.
