Korea Football Federation ‘New national team coach, appointment target remains unchanged by February’
(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Choi Song-ah = Vice President Lee Yong-soo (64), who was in charge of promoting and managing the national soccer team, resigned as head of the National Team Strengthening Committee of the Korean Football Federation.
On the 4th, the Korean Football Federation said, “Vice-President Lee expressed his appreciation to both the chairman of power-building and the vice-chairman,” and said, “Michael Müller (58), the current chairman of technology development of the association, was named as the successor to the power chairman of the reinforcements.”
Vice-President Lee, who was appointed vice-president in January 2021 and returned to the Football Association, held the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, etc. While he was concurrently president when Kim Pan-gon, then chairman of the Power Reinforcement Committee, stepped down to take over as Malaysia national team coach in May last year.
Vice-President Lee said, “From the moment I was first nominated, I thought my role was my role until the World Cup in Qatar” and expressed his gratitude to the association after the tournament.
He added, “I think it is the right direction for the new head of power reinforcement to prepare for the 2026 World Cup with the new national team coach. I wish the national team further development and good results in the future.”
His successor, Müller, comes from Germany, and it is the first time that a foreigner has taken charge of the national team.
President Müller took office in April 2018 as trainer for training managers at the Football Association and since the autumn of that year has been twice president of technical development of the association and has worked for the development of youth football and youth, such as training frontline leaders and introducing an 8-8 game for elementary school students.
Before coming to Korea, he worked as a coach for the German Football Association and also coached the German Under-15 and Under-18 national teams.
He also contributed to the 2017 UEFA Under-21 Championship win as a scout for the national under-21 (U-21) team.
The Korean Football Federation said: “President Müller not only has first-hand experience with advanced European football, but also has a good understanding of the Korean football environment, from youth to professional and national players, while working in Korea for five years.” he has played an important part in setting the policy of the association, I expect him to demonstrate his abilities.”
President Müller’s immediate task is to appoint a new national coach.
The association said, “The new Power-Building Committee will discuss the first batch of candidates prepared by former chairman Lee Yong-soo. If necessary, the new committee can add candidates. ‘There are no changes,’ it explained .
President Müller said: “I am very happy and thank the Korean Football Federation for choosing me. I am well aware of the high status of the national football team in Korea.”
