British orthopedist David R. Sullivan has confirmed that there can be symptoms of high cholesterol that appear on the feet.
He pointed out that pain or burning of the toe, especially at night, could be a warning sign of high levels of cholesterol in the blood.
He explained that this pain indicates atherosclerosis, which is the accumulation of deposits that form in the blood vessels, which prevents blood from flowing freely, according to what was reported by the British newspaper, “Express”.
“Unlike the pain of everyday wear and tear, the warning sign of high cholesterol found in the feet is a burning sensation or pain while resting in bed,” Sullivan added.
He continued, “This is also a sign that your extremities are not getting enough oxygen-rich blood.”
So it is highly recommended that anyone who suffers from such symptoms immediately consult a doctor for an immediate check of the level of cholesterol in the blood, because over time, if left untreated, too much cholesterol leads to peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
In the worst case scenario, peripheral arterial disease is life-threatening and usually affects the legs, often leading to leg pain when walking and, in severe cases, to gangrene and even amputation.
This “cramp-like pain” during exercise could be PAD, as well as:
persistent pain
Ulcers
Gangrene of the feet
Anyone with such symptoms should be referred to a vascular specialist, who will check blood flow using a Doppler test, “used to compare blood pressure at the ankle to blood pressure in the arm.”
The British doctor stated that the “normal ratio” would be “0.9 to 1.1″, while someone with PAD would have a ratio less than 0.9”.
People with PAD have up to “five times” the risk of a heart attack compared to those without the condition.
