For two weeks, Shanghai and its 25 million inhabitants have been under strict confinement. In question, the worst viral contagion that the country has known since the start of the epidemic with tens of thousands of daily cases.
China has adopted the choice of zero covid on its territory, unlike many countries which have opted for “cohabitation” with the virus. If this strategic choice had allowed the Middle Kingdom to be spared for two years, it seems to be backfiring now.
Several large cities have found themselves confined since March, such as Shenzhen, the technological cradle in the south, and Shanghai, the economic capital of the country. The economy therefore finds itself at a standstill when a 4% increase in GDP over the last quarter of 2021 has just been released.
This Monday, the authorities announced the first 3 deaths since the start of containment in Shanghai. These are 3 elderly people with underlying disease. Officially, the country has only recorded 4,641 deaths linked to Covid since its appearance.
However, if this figure remains low, the consequences are heavily felt among the population. Taken aback by this confinement, the inhabitants of Shanghai are starting to run out of provisions and hunger is fueling anger.
Many videos are circulating where we see residents attacking officials dressed in protective suits.
