Reports provided by Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), government actors, the Red Cross and UN agencies on the ground in the Far North region of Cameroon are not reassuring.
According to a report published in June 2023 by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) in collaboration with certain humanitarian partners, around 700 households are newly displaced in the district of Hilé Alifa following attacks by groups non-state armed forces.
The said report also mentions that the armed conflict in the Lake Chad basin is still marked by the persistence of the activities of these armed groups and the subsequent operations of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) have continued to affect the populations of the departments of Mayo. -Sava, Mayo-Tsanaga and Logone and Chari.
Added to this insecurity is the damage caused by recent floods, epidemics, food insecurity, human and animal health. More than 2 million people are currently food insecure in this part of the country. Concerns highlighted by local authorities during the 15th edition of World Food Aid Day, which ended its activities on August 19, 2023.
The opportunity being the thief, the NGOs and other humanitarians working on the spot have formulated a complaint addressed to the donors. Support of about 95 billion FCFA is needed to supervise the activities of these humanitarians on the ground.
It should be noted that on June 23, 2023, the World Bank approved a project in the amount of 330 million dollars (more than 19 billion FCFA) for Cameroon. The objective is to help the country to strengthen connectivity and climate resilience in the Far North region, and to improve access to basic infrastructure there.
