Have we kept our backs straight and by creating demand for cheaper food products have we helped prices fall? With such a question, for the fourth time at the end of the year, “Tasty.lv” went to investigate how prices have changed in various food (and also one non-food) stores. There are products that have become cheaper, but there are also those that have become more expensive, despite economists’ predictions at the beginning of the year that inflation will decline. Let’s see what the situation is!
This time, in addition to the usual visit to the stores “Rimi”, “Maxima”, “Elvi”, “Top”, “Lidl”, “Mego” and “LaTS”, we also looked at the shelves of the food products of the store “Depo” to find out – if really ” in depi” the prices are lower, as the tweeters say on Twitter?
We went to all the stores this time on June 5 of this year, Monday. We chose some in the capital, some outside Riga, to understand the overall picture. The same disclaimer as above applies – we still fix the lowest price for the specific product. We took into account both discounts and the fact that there are no discounts. Most often, however, store chains have their own benefit ratio if a visitor makes a purchase with the customer card of the particular chain. If there was a shortage on the shelf in one of the stores, for example, there were no simple tea cookies or chicken hams, we did not record the data.

What did the economists promise, and what is happening now?
Although we promised during the previous part of the research in January that we would go to study prices again in three months, we quickly realized that nothing much would have changed in such a short time. The second quarter mentioned by economists has arrived, when, according to forecasts, prices should decrease, so the beginning of June, in our opinion, is the right time for another price review.
And, wow, at the beginning of May, economists predicted that the decline will be in certain price groups, but not comprehensive. Because wage growth is high, people retain their purchasing power, which means prices stay high. This spring has brought other troubles, which we will feel directly in the price of food products – in many places in Latvia, fruit trees, bushes, even potato fields, as well as grain have frozen. This means that the harvest will be poor, the products will be less and the prices will not be very friendly.
