‘Nagashi Somen’ is a popular summer food in Japan, where you eat somen that has been drained along with water through a channel made by splitting bamboo in half. Many Japanese tourists, including famous domestic YouTuber ‘Kwak Tube’, visit Nagashi Somen restaurants and post videos on YouTube and social networking services (SNS), making it familiar to Korea as well. However, it was recently revealed that a total of 892 food poisoning cases occurred at Japan’s famous Nagashi Somen restaurant in August alone. According to Japanese media reports such as NHK broadcast on the 8th, 892 food poisoning patients occurred in August at the famous Nagashi Somen restaurant located in Tsubata-cho, Ishikawa Prefecture. This is the highest number of food poisoning patients that have occurred in Ishikawa Prefecture since 2020. From August 11th to 17th, people aged from 1 year old to those in their 80s who ate at the restaurant developed food poisoning symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. 22 people were hospitalized, but all are said to have recovered. Patients with food poisoning came from all over Japan, and NHK reported that a large number of patients occurred due to a lot of movement of people returning home due to the Obon holiday (August 15th).

According to an investigation by the local public health center, the cause of food poisoning was identified as ‘Campylobacter’ detected in water. Campylobacter is a bacterium that lives in the intestines of livestock such as cows, chickens, and pigs. People become infected when they consume contaminated water, undercooked meat, or food prepared on a counter that has come into contact with contaminated meat. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever last for up to a week, and usually recover spontaneously, but if symptoms are severe, anti-Septic treatment is required. The cause of Campylobacter being detected in the water of the restaurant has not yet been determined. The restaurant in question, which has been suspended from business, has announced that it will close after paying damages to food poisoning patients.
