Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir warned Hungary against protectionism in response to the Ukraine war in the debate about impending food shortages. “I advise all states to act sensibly here. I also say the same thing to EU member Hungary,” said the Green politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group. “Anyone who closes their markets acts like a fire accelerator. If everyone does that, we’ll hit the wall. Then the prices will shoot through the roof.” Özdemir reiterated stronger support for the World Food Program. “We are the second largest payer after the USA – and we will do more than in the past.” He had already announced on Friday that Germany wanted to provide up to an additional 200 million euros for the UN World Food Program.
