Food Crisis, Kim Jong-un Tells Residents to Eat Black Swans

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

North Korea reportedly experiencing food crisis. As a result of this problem, the North Korean government ordered its citizens to eat less to make black swans as a substitute for food.

Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un reportedly asked the government and people of North Korea to breed ornamental black swans for food as an innovation in order to survive in the midst of the economic and food crisis.

Recently, North Korea’s state media has been promoting the consumption of black goose meat to its citizens.

“Black goose meat is delicious and has medicinal benefits,” said the North’s Labor Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, Monday (25/10).

The North Korean government is reported to have conducted research to use ornamental birds as food in 2019. The country’s authorities also appealed to schools, companies and industry to grow food and raise fish to meet their own food needs.

“This solution is offered to solve the problem of large-scale crop failure in providing food stocks for the whole country and the implementation of restrictions due to Covid-19 which has limited imports of food and other goods since early 2020,” said Colin Zwirko in NK News as quoted by NK News. Reuters.

Not only ordering geese to eat, the North Korean government also ordered its citizens to eat less.

A resident told Radio Free Asia that two weeks ago, the North Korean government visited people’s homes to inform them that the food crisis might still hit until 2025.

“The food situation is now serious and people are suffering. When the government asks people to save money and eat less food until 2025, they can’t do anything. They can only be sad,” said the resident, who did not want to be identified.

Several international experts said that this food crisis occurred due to the country’s harvest period having ended.

They also assess the country is increasing their trade and receiving humanitarian assistance through China to overcome this crisis.

Not only that, South Korea’s intelligence agency said that North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, is now ordering the implementation of security for rice stocks. This information was conveyed in a closed parliamentary session, Thursday (28/10).

However, South Korean intelligence assesses this crisis is still better than last year, given the sunny weather in North Korea in recent months. He also said North Korea was taking steps to open its borders to Russia and China in the next few months.

North Korea itself has experienced a food security crisis for a long time. Several researchers explained the reasons for this crisis, among others, due to economic mismanagement.

This condition is exacerbated by international sanctions for North Korea due to nuclear weapons, natural disasters, and restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Kim previously admitted that the food situation in his country was not good. He also apologized for the sacrifices that his citizens had to make when dealing with the corona virus pandemic.

However, Kim said economic conditions in North Korea had improved. He denies the UN’s claim that thousands of people in the country are vulnerable to starvation.
