the essentials in brief

  • In addition to the vote on the AHV proposals, there are also elections in the canton of St. Gallen.
  • At least one candidate is a familiar face: food influencer Noah Bachofen.
  • On Instagram he explains: “Go vote – but not me!” He is just a list filler.

On March 3, 2024, two national proposals will be put to the vote – in the canton of St. Gallen, the electorate will also be able to elect a new government and parliament: In eight constituencies, a total of 1,010 candidates will be vying for 120 seats in the cantonal council, and 13 candidates will be vying for 7 seats in the government council.

At least one of the 1,010 candidates is a familiar face: food blogger Noah Bachofen has 142,000 followers on Instagram! According to “Hypeauditor”, the 29-year-old is one of the 200 most influential Swiss people on the platform. On his channel he shares recipes and cooking tips, reviews restaurants and lets his followers take part in his private life.

Reverse psychology?

However, the Social Democrat from Rapperswil only promotes his candidacy for cantonal council in passing – with reverse psychology: “Don’t vote for me – I’m a chef, rapper, golfer, podcaster, dad and influencer – but what I’m really not: a politician!”

His program points include free public transport for everyone and a general, Switzerland-wide ban on table grills – “Raclette only in the original version!” The most important point on the program, however: “Monday will be the new Sunday, Sunday will be the new Saturday, but Saturday will remain Saturday,” as he explains in a video. In other words: three day weekend!

A magnet for votes for his party?

According to his own statement, he is nothing more than a “list filler,” explains Bachofen on Instagram: He likes to play the clown on the Internet and share his best recipes and restaurants with his followers. When it comes to the important things in life – politics, for example – he simply has “too little knowledge”.

In this day and age, however, it is even more important to choose people who actually know what they are doing. “So, if you can: go vote – but not for me,” was Bachofen’s appeal.

Would you elect Noah Bachofen to the St. Gallen Cantonal Council?

It is entirely conceivable that the influencer uses his fame to drive undecided people to the polls. Whether he will actually enter politics after March 3 is anyone’s guess. At least with regard to the last name, Bachofen would certainly be the suitable successor for a certain centrist Federal Councilor from Valais.
