Food and Aphrodisiacs: Myths and Facts

First a plate of fresh oysters, accompanied by a glass of champagne, and strawberries dipped in chocolate for dessert. If we are to believe the stories, then all these dishes should be extremely aphrodisiac. But, is that right: is there really such a thing as food that gets you in the mood?

Aphrodisiacs, also known as aphrodisiacs (derived from Aphrodite, goddess of fertility): people are fascinated by them. What foods get you in the mood? From rhino horn powder to almonds, humanity has tried just about everything to see what makes us horny in the kitchen. Does such a thing really exist?

Nutrition Center: not proven

If we do Nutrition Center to believe, it does not exist. At least: it states that it has not been proven anywhere that chocolate, honey or almond would indeed be aphrodisiac. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), there is no product that can officially claim to be aphrodisiac or erection-enhancing. But, according to the center, researchers have found connections between what is in a product and how it promotes erections or lust.

However, it rightly indicates that lust is objective and that it is not always clear how the researchers proceeded. It also reports that it could well give a placebo effect: that you think that a product is aphrodisiac because of its image, and that you are therefore more open to eroticism. There is nothing wrong with that, according to the Nutrition Center, although you do have to be careful with certain supplements, such as yohimbine, Spanish fly, mad honey and the Bufo pad. In some cases they can even mean your death, because what exactly is in them is often unclear.

Especially if the oil has a nice taste …

Chocolate, champagne and oysters

Let’s start with the usual suspects: the chocolates, oysters and champagne. Do they cause it to bubble in certain places?

Chocolate is probably the best known aphrodisiac, and for many people also the tastiest and most accessible. The fact that the brown gold from warm regions has acquired such a reputation is due to the theobromine it contains. That doesn’t necessarily make you horny, but it does make you feel more comfortable. That’s because theobromine gives you a energy boost and improves your mood. It even seems that endorphins and dopamine are released when you eat chocolate. And those substances are associated with pleasure.

Oysters are aphrodisiac for a completely different reason: they contain quite high amounts of zinc, which increases fertility and sperm production. It seems to be very aphrodisiac especially for men, but just don’t tell and enjoy. Make sure the oysters are good, otherwise it will be anything but a fun evening.

Champagne is the odd one out: it doesn’t really have specific substances that get you in the mood. It is probably on the one hand its luxurious image and on the other hand that feeling that the bubbles and the alcohol give together: as if it is all going to your head for a while.

Lesser known aphrodisiacs

Then on to the lesser known foods when it comes to arousing lust. According to nutrition expert dr. Adam Cunliffe Is there really food that puts you in the mood? He mentions several foods that boost your libido enormously. They contribute to better performance, fertility or horniness, says this doctor. These are the products he mentions for a hot date:

Almonds: almonds (but also other nuts) are full of omega-3 fats and they also seem to influence your mood in a positive, sexual way.

Avocado: This generally not very sustainably grown green fruit is there to increase fertility.

Vacant: The bromeliad enzyme is also one to keep an eye on. This one increases the man’s libido (just like pineapple, by the way). It is also an interesting fruit for women, because the presence of potassium, vitamin B and magnesium will get you in the mood.

Ginseng: this has been scientifically proven to increase your hormone levels: this is a real aphrodisiac. For example, there are even variants that improve the quality of the sperm (curious? Take a look at Ashwagandha).

Pomegranate: This fruit with its striking shape is said to increase testosterone.

Honing: it’s sexy to look at, but also to eat. It appears to increase testosterone levels and also affects female hormones: for example, the boron in honey is said to make better use of estrogen.

Garlic: garlic doesn’t seem like the most romantic option because of the air it gives off, but it contains allicin, which makes your blood flow faster. In addition, it increases the hormone level, so that you are all in all much more ‘on’.

Aphrodisiacs: do they exist or not?

So there is plenty of choice, whether you have a sweet tooth or prefer something a bit heartier, although you may wonder to what extent it really works. There are many wild stories going around and some products you will have to eat in fairly large numbers for their ‘horny’ effect to indeed get the most out of them sexually.

What is especially important to get in the mood is that you feel good about yourself. Do you wear comfortable clothes, or clothes that make you feel sexy? Does your bed partner make you feel relaxed and comfortable? In the end, those things are still the best ways to evoke a little of the goddess Aphrodite in yourself.
