The federal food agency (FAVV) calls for five products of the Ferrero brand to be stopped. These include Kinder Surpise and Kinder Mini Eggs. These chocolate products are very popular, especially now that Easter is approaching. But they are linked to a Salmonella outbreak in Europe.

It concerns the following products that were produced at Ferrero in Arlon: Kinder Surprise 20g and 3x20g with an expiry date between 11/07/22 and 7/10/22, -Kinder Surprise Maxi with an expiry date between 10/08/22 and 10 /09/22, Schoko-Bons with an expiry date between 10/08/22 and 10/09/22 and Kinder Mini Eggs with an expiry date between 10/08/22 and 10/09/22. Consumers in possession of these products are urged not to consume the products.

These products are popular with young children. With Easter approaching, the FASFC requests that parents and educators check whether they have these products in their possession and, if so, ensure that they are not consumed.

According to Hélène Bonte, spokeswoman for the FASFC, there are outbreaks in six countries. The countries concerned were not disclosed.

Fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea

There are currently no confirmed cases linked to the outbreak in Belgium, the FASFC says. “There are already a few suspicious cases,” says Bonte. “But it is not yet certain whether they can be associated with those products. Analyzes are now being carried out together with Sciensano.”

In the United Kingdom, 63 salmonella infections have already been linked to chocolate products, the Reuters news agency reported. This mainly concerns children under the age of five.

Salmonellosis is a common infection that in most cases heals without treatment. In some cases, Salmonellosis can become more serious. In case of severe symptoms, a doctor should be consulted who can initiate treatment. The possible symptoms of infection by Salmonellosis are fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea within 6 to 72 hours after consumption of the contaminated food. Young children, pregnant women, people with reduced resistance and the elderly are at greater risk of developing symptoms, says Helene Bonte.
