Fonterra and Superbrewed Food collaborate to further develop biomass protein technology

Global dairy cooperative Fonterra and natural ingredients producer Superbrewed Food have joined forces to promote sustainable food production.

The partnership combines Superbrewed’s biomass protein platform with Fonterra’s dairy processing, ingredients and applications expertise to develop additional nutrient-dense, functional biomass proteins. The collaboration targets the increasing global demand for alternative proteins and reflects both companies’ commitment to delivering sustainably produced, functional proteins that meet the needs of customers and consumers worldwide.

Strategic cooperations

The collaboration with Fonterra builds on the launch of Superbrewed’s patented biomass protein, the so-called postbiotic cultured protein.

Postbiotic Cultured Protein is a non-GMO, allergen-free, nutrient-rich bacterial biomass protein that was recently given the green light by the FDA for the US market. In evaluating the ingredients, Fonterra found that the function and nutritional value of postbiotic cultured protein complements dairy products in food applications with growing consumer demand.

In addition, Superbrewed has demonstrated that its non-GMO fermentation platform can be adapted to ferment other ingredients. The multi-year joint project aims to develop new biomass protein solutions based on the fermentation of various feedstocks, including Fonterra’s lactose permeate, which is a byproduct of dairy processing.

Bryan Tracy, CEO of Superbrewed Food, said of the new partnership: “We are delighted to be partnering with a company of Fonterra’s caliber that has recognized the value of bringing postbiotic cultured protein to market and taking a critical step in expanding our offering of biomass ingredients that further contribute to sustainable food production.”

Chris Ireland, GM Innovation Partnerships, commented: “Partnering with Superbrewed Foods is a fantastic opportunity. Their cutting-edge technology aligns with our mission to provide the world with sustainable nutrition solutions and meet the global demand for protein solutions.”

The cooperation with Fonterra marks the second partnership that the foodtech company has entered into this year. In February, Superbrewed Food announced a partnership with Döhler GmbH, a global manufacturer, marketer and supplier of natural ingredients for the food, beverage and nutrition industries, to increase production. As a production partner, Döhler provides extensive fermentation capacity for the production of Superbrewed Food’s patented postbiotic protein ingredient.
