He pointed out that if the omicron strain turns out to be more contagious than the currently dominant delta variant, then this strain of Covid-19 virus is likely to reach Latvia as well.
Clovin admitted that the two most serious things that have caused concern about the omicron are the rapid spread of the Covid-19 variant in southern Africa.
“A similar spread of the virus has been observed in other variants of the virus, which have not turned out to be so dangerous since then. But here is the fact that an incredible number of mutations have been detected in the virus,” Klovins said.
Studies are currently being carried out in various laboratories around the world to see if people who have previously had Covid-19 or have been vaccinated are able to neutralize the new strain of the virus. The first data on this could be already this week, the researcher said.
