Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Investment Minister/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia said many countries were interested in investing in batteries for electric cars in Indonesia. In fact, there are about 6-7 countries that want to invest in Indonesia.
Bahlil said that battery investment in Indonesia is not only focused on one country. He said, Indonesia adheres to a free and active economy, so that Indonesia does not only give space to only one country.
Bahlil explained that the company from China, namely Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL) is interested in investing in EV batteries in Indonesia and soon according to him, European investors will also invest in Indonesia.
“I will announce Europe soon, but I don’t need to talk. We at the Ministry of Investment have a protocol, we have signed (agreement) and it has just been announced, or is believed to be true, just announced. So Europe will also enter, one of China has already CATL,” he said in a press conference, Friday (17/09/2021).
In addition, he also mentioned that there are other countries in Southeast Asia that will invest in EV batteries in Indonesia, so that there will be around 6-7 countries interested in investing in Indonesia.
“So there are 6-7 countries that will enter Indonesia. So, we will make Indonesia a center for car battery manufacturers,” he continued.
“It’s not true that it’s only Korea, there shouldn’t be a single country that regulates Indonesia. We provide a competitive space for that” fair,” he insisted.
He further said that Indonesia controls one of the components of the battery raw material, namely nickel which is the owner of the largest reserves in the world. Bahlil added, Indonesia should be a big player in this battery sector.
RI has a dream to become a global battery player in 2027. In order to achieve this target, the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) also formed the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC). IBC will also partner with foreign investors who will invest in Indonesia later.
