“Foreign Minister Lavrov’s statement is an inexcusable and outrageous statement and a terrible historical error,” Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said on Twitter.
“The Jews did not kill themselves in the Holocaust. The lowest level of racism against Jews is to accuse Jews themselves of antisemitism.” Russia TodayWednesday (3/5/2022).
Lapid said Israel expected an apology, and the Russian ambassador was summoned “for difficult talks.”

Other Israeli officials also expressed anger at Lavrov’s comments, including Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who accused Russia’s top diplomat of using the Holocaust as a political tool.
The Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem also denounced Lavrov’s words as wrong and dangerous. Moscow itself has not commented on the matter.
Earlier, speaking to Italian media company Mediaset on Sunday, Lavrov confirmed that one of the goals of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine was the “denazification” of the country. A reporter mentioned that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was Jewish.
“I could be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood in him. This means absolutely nothing. Wise Jews say that the most ardent anti-Semites are usually the Jews. Every family has a scapegoat, as we often say,” replied Lavrov.
