Following 11 accidents, an investigation is launched into the unmanned system used by Tesla

The Road Safety Authority (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into the use of the Autopilot autonomous driving system by US electric car manufacturer Tesla Motors following 11 road accidents.

One of the accidents killed a person, while seven other accidents involved victims, according to NHTSA. The oldest of these traffic accidents occurred in 2018.

Tesla founder Ilon Mask has repeatedly defended the Autopilot system, and the company explains that its use requires active driver oversight, but critics, including in Congress, say the system can be easily fooled and call on NHTSA to take action.

Experts from Consumer Reports have shown in a video that Autopilot can be fooled by allowing the system to drive a car when no one is behind the wheel. Similar videos can be seen on the Tik-Tok platform and other social media.

Meanwhile, NHTSA has issued a reminder to the public that no car currently on the market can drive on its own.
