Jakarta –
Instagram brings new features that make Stories so it’s easier to enjoy. Instagram Stories now has a captions sticker feature that can transcribe the words on videos automatically.
This feature will be very useful not only for Instagram users who are hard of hearing or deaf, but also users who want to watch videos without sound or don’t have headphones.
To display captions on Instagram Stories, users must record new videos using the Stories or Reels camera in the Instagram application. Users can also select videos in the cellphone gallery.
After that, tap the sticker icon and look for the ‘Captions’ sticker in the tray menu. As with other text options in Stories, users can change the style, position, and color of the captions that appear.
Users can also edit words inside captions to correct spelling, punctuation, or any words that weren’t transcribed accurately. After the Stories are uploaded, the captions will appear in the video and be visible to other users.
Currently the captions sticker feature is only available in English and in English-speaking countries. But Instagram plans to roll it out in other languages in more countries in the near future.
This feature was launched first in Stories, but Instagram has already tested it on Reels and will soon be rolled out to the public.
The captions sticker feature was first discovered last year when it was still being developed with other potential features such as Collab, Link, Reshare stickers, and others. The captions sticker was put on trial earlier this spring by several Instagram users.
Interestingly, Instagram announced this automatic captions feature just a few weeks after TikTok launched a similar feature called auto captions.
But the two products are a little different because TikTok auto captions can transcribe speech into English or Japanese, but the text can’t be edited. TikTok creators haven’t used this feature much because they prefer to use captions that are self-made or via third-party applications.
Instagram emphasized they had previously launched a captions feature for IGTV and the Threads app. But by launching in Stories, this feature will reach more users considering that Instagram Stories is used by more than 500 million people every day.
