Detected for the first time in Wuhan in China in November 2019, the new coronavirus called Covid-19 has spread over the months around the world and left thousands dead. In January 2020, a first case was identified in France. In early March, the virus is also present in Martinique.

It was on Thursday, March 5, 2020 that the Regional Health Agency of Martinique identified the first two cases of Covid-19 in Martinique.
These two people, a 54-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman, were passing through Martinique and were staying in a hotel in Trois Îlets.
Both were taken care of by the Samu doctor according to the procedure and placed in solitary confinement after their positive analyzes.

More and more cases

If at the start the number of sick people remained stable, over the days, this number increasing, the Regional Health Agency published “situation points“daily from March 11, 2020 in order to identify the number of cases, patients hospitalized in intensive care at the CHU of Martinique, people healed and victims.

A more exposed population in Martinique

With many patients who already suffer from chronic pathologies such as diabetes, hypertension, respiratory failure (asthma) or obesity, the population of Martinique is more exposed than others to serious complications in the event of infection with Covid-19. These are called comorbidity factors.
An even greater fragility due to an overwhelmingly aging population.

In addition, a clear distinction must be made between the number of cases identified by the Regional Health Agency and the number of real cases which, according to scientific estimates, is much higher.
