Rafael Bengoa believes that “epidemiologically” it is in the seventh wave, with the most infectious variant
Rafael Bengoa, international health policy adviser, has been convinced that, as of today “epidemiologically”, a seventh wave of the pandemic is going through, with the most infectious variant “of the omicron lineage”.
In an interview on Radio Euskadi, Bengoa pointed out that the variants that are currently acting and that have triggered infections are called AB4 and AB5 and are “Very highly infectious, almost at the level of measles.”
“That means that, epidemiologically, a wave is being expressed. Another thing is that this wave has the impact that it had in the two previous years in hospitals. These variants, although they are much more infectious, do not produce the same clinical damage as the previous ones“explains the expert.
As to the symptoms of these new variants are “the same” but “less severe” because “the learning curve in the medical and pharmaceutical field is enormous”. “They know what to do when a patient begins to have problems with oxygenation, lungs, etc,” she points out.
In Bengoa’s opinion, the current one is the “most infectious” covid variant of all those registered during the pandemic because “it is an omicron lineage, which was already very, very infectious, which manages to pass through the immunity that we have been creating, both with the vaccine and with previous infections of other variants”.
