More energetic and modern
Already released on Midsummer last year, the single “Mežā” (produced by Povels Olson from Sweden, who worked with the group “Brainstorm”) marked a change in the sound and visual image of “Tautumeita”, and this new direction was strengthened by the song “Guli guli” and also the producer of most of the album is Reinis Sējāns). Although it is still ethno music, the sound has become more energetic, rhythmic, “springy” and more modern, but the singers themselves emphasize femininity in their images. The collaboration with Renārs Kaupers in the song “Muoseņa” (and vice versa – the collaboration of “Brainstorms” and “Tautumeiti” in the song “Where the God’s Sleigh Slides”) is on the pop side (as it should in collaborative projects), but ”Introductory song“ Vīna ūtrai ”and also other new pieces are again in the spirit of“ Tautumeitu ‘2021-2022 ”- they contain a thorough cocktail of styles.
In the new version, “Tautumeitas” performs with the composition of “live” musicians and even “pulls” in the direction of ethno-electro-rock. “You’re probably right,” laughs Asnate Rancāne, the group’s leader. “The sound has really changed – in a way, consciously, in a way unconsciously, we went for it. We create the music we like. It is clear that we are also growing professionally – when we took the stage five years ago, we had just graduated from the folklore stage, and even then our changes seemed grand. So this album is an organic and natural sequel. But we are very happy that we are growing up, and this is the music that is “moving” us now. “
The coffin was delayed at the right moment
The album contains 14 songs, including the previously released singles “Muoseņa”, “Guli guli”, “Panama” and “Mežā”, the oldest of which is “Panama” – this song was released on June 1, 2020 (!) With an application that it is “the first single from an upcoming album”. Quite an atypical hesitation for such active and lively girls… “Exactly my thoughts, only you forgot about it for a year and a half or two,” Asnate smiles. “Those years just disappeared somewhere, and that was reflected in our operations. When we released “Panama”, we really thought that this single would be followed soon by our album – music was already written for it. But things went the way they did, because we also tried to capture the feelings and mood around us. In addition, we did not go so smoothly because there was a change in the composition of the group, which we also had to afford. We did not rush events and waited for the right moment. It’s here now. “
About the change of composition – last summer Lauma Bērza left, who has now been replaced by the group “Radio trio” and several bekGabriel Zvaigznīte, who met vocalists (also at the Brainstorm). Although she is only officially with the “Daughters” for six months, the singer herself said that she felt that she had been here for a lifetime. Listening and watching from the side, it really seemed that the girls had sung perfectly, and from the point of view of the stage image, they fit together well.
Now consists of 11 people
At the presentation of the album, “Tautumeitas” also presented an addition to its line-up: guitarist Kaspars Vizulis, bass specialist and longtime partner of Asnate stage Stanislavs Judins, pianist (and also drummer) Elvis Lintiņš and another “folk girl”, an attractive and explosive bundle, were present (She was also seen behind a bunch of “Brainstorming” percussion instruments). This probably means that in the future it will be more difficult and financially expensive to get the “Folk Girls” together for concerts. “We will be eleven with the tuner – the tuner is also a member of the group,” Asnate laughs. “Sometimes people don’t understand that we are a big band, they think it’s just us girls, and then they still ask if we can’t perform in a reduced chamber.” But we’re about quality music. We invest a lot in what we create, and performing in a smaller group would be like taking a piece of yourself to find that compromise. I think ten people on stage is a completely normal number – in the world, groups also perform in such formations. Music and quality sound are important to us. ”
First Japan, then Skulte
Asnate thinks the new album is like a harbinger of freedom and inspiration within the band since the release of the first album: runway. “
Renārs Kaupers also joked about the topic of aviation at the presentation of the album, mentioning that “Folk Girls” have a runway, they like to sing about airplanes (“Brainstorm” also has an album about an airfield that is too far away), and maybe these coincidences could to create something in common at the upcoming “Folk Girls” big concert, which will take place on August 26 in Skulte port in Saulkrasti. By the way, it’s a bit strange that a new album has been released, but the girls are going to show it to a wider audience only at the end of August, moreover, in one concert… “Our dear listeners in Latvia don’t know yet Explains Asnate. “When we return, we will give a concert in Skulte port, and in time we plan to announce other tour concerts. As for the treadmills and planes, I think there will definitely be something to do with the engines at this big concert, because we will be in the port of Skulte, where something industrial may appear. The stage scenographers are working, there will definitely be surprises! ”
Asnate closed the musical part of the album presentation event on Thursday with the words: “Now the song” Mežā “is playing and – summer is starting!” Nudien – where even better wish ?!
