Folie à Deux is not a full-fledged musical, but the music is “an essential element”, says the director

Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips has confirmed that the sequel is not a full-on musical, but music will be a “vital element” in it.

Phillips shared the news during a presentation at Warner Bros. at CinemaCon and at the same time finally commented on reports that the second Joker movie will be a musical. He said that the team never talked about Joker: Folie à Deux being a full-on musical, but that music would play a big part. He also said that the film will not “deviate too much” from the original and that Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, has always had “music in him”.

This musical element was a big draw that led to Joker: Folie à Deux. A recent report from Variety stated that the sequel would include at least 15 covers and possibly one or two original songs.

We glimpsed this focus on music in the first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, which was also revealed at CinemaCon. The trailer shows how it manages to live up to the film’s tagline “He’s Not Alone Anymore” while also showing a change in Harley Quinn’s story played by Lady Gaga.

Harley Quinn is usually a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, but in this trailer she appears to be a patient instead. He also leans into the music side with a voiceover saying, “We use music to make us whole, to heal the brokenness within ourselves.”.

Joker: Folie à Deux opens in theaters on October 4, 2024 and will be part of DC Elseworldswhich will live outside of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU.

In the 2019 Joker reviewwhich had a 10/10 rating, our American colleagues said that “it’s not just an amazing comic book movie, it’s an amazing movie, period. It offers no easy answers to the troubling questions it asks about a cruel society in decline. A fully committed performance by Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips’ masterful if loose reimagining of the DC source material make The Joker a film that should leave comic book fans and non-fans concerned and moved in all the right ways.”
