foldable inwards, outwards and flap model

Xiaomi e associated with foldable phones just before Samsung launched the first Galaxy Fold. I’ve seen credible leaks from January 2019, but no trace of real, commercial product or at least any prototype. Now there are rumors that 2021 is the big year, and Xiaomi would prepare no less than 3 foldable phones.

Next year, the Chinese company that celebrated 10 years of existence in 2020 will propose us a foldable inwards, a phone that folds outward, But and a flap model. Xiaomi is not the only one with big plans, and Samsung could launch 3 if not 4 foldable per year. Oppo and Vivo also have plans in the segment. Analyst Ross Young is the one who claims on Twitter that Xiaomi worked on 3 foldable phones, but the technology of the screens used here is not yet known.

I’ve said it before and I repeat: I think Xiaomi has stayed away from the segment until the price of components has dropped, increased production efficiency and it became possible to make a foldable phone for $ 999. That is the psychological threshold from which adoption could rise massively. Xiaomi had a successful 2020 year, with sales growth especially in the midrange and budget area. It can afford to invest in foldables and possibly bring back to life the acclaimed Mi Mix series.

Mi Mix Alpha was appreciated in its time, but it remained strictly a prototype and a limited edition. It must also be said that in 2020 I saw more often Xiaomi folding flap phone patents, than with infolding / outfolding format. Chances are we’ll see a Galaxy Z Flip rival next year, maybe even a rolling one, with a little luck.
