Now that a vast majority of the world’s population is at home, there is at least one company that is taking advantage of that. Netflix has just released its first quarter results.
Titles that attracted the most viewers on streaming platform Tiger King, the fourth season of La Casa de Papel and and the dating reality series Love is Blind. Tiger King, the documentary about the striking zoo owner, attracted more than 64 million viewers in the first month. It is exceptional that a documentary attracts so many viewers. The hype surrounding Joe Exotic’s story has spread to a wide variety of memes and other internet hits over the past week.
The Spanish piling series La Casa de Papel, in the US and UK freely translated to Money Heist, remains a guaranteed hit for Netflix. Since the company bought the rights to the first two seasons, which had previously only been broadcast on Spanish national television, and had a third season produced itself, the hype surrounding this series has not died down. In fact, the fourth set of episodes even drew slightly more viewers than Tiger King. Sixty-five million subscribers were there to watch how the group of robbers managed to get rid of the Spanish currency.
It makes sense to mention with these figures that Netflix does not register a viewer until the full content has been viewed. The company counts a subscriber as a viewer if more than 2 minutes of the film, series or documentary has been viewed.
The quarantine period has also caused more people to subscribe to the streaming giant. In the first quarter, the number of subscribers rose to 183 million people worldwide, an increase of 16 million.
Netflix remains realistic in response to the good quarterly figures: “We are currently seeing an increase in subscriber numbers and global viewership. We expect this number to decline somewhat after people are no longer advised or even required to stay at home. We hope that this period of home quarantine will soon be over.”
