Through the scenes told, played and danced by five artists, the “Feet” show will allow you to discover the birth of jazz dances, their paths and how their influences have been decisive in modern dances. The performance is offered by the Art’Riège association on November 8 at 9 p.m., in the Sandy room of the Espace Olivier-Carol.
Having returned from the jazz clubs, the “ballrooms”, the theaters and the streets of Louisiana, Angélique Larqué and Thierry Vosdey will dance to introduce the worlds, the artistic and political cultures of the South of America.
Three dance styles
The “Ball” culture, for example, which appeared in Harlem in the 1920s, is a legacy of urban culture and in particular street “battles”. This is a movement from American minorities. Dancers “walk,” that is, compete for a trophy at events designated as “balls.”
In the same way, spectators will be drawn into this popular dance, the cake-walk, born around 1850 among black people living in the South of the United States. It was a matter of imitating with irony the attitude of their masters going to the balls. Through this syncopated dance in the form of a march, the slaves brought to life what remained of the African tradition. It was imported to Europe in the 1900s via the music hall.
In Harlem, in black and segregated New York in the 1920s, African-American society also danced “lindy hop”, an emergence of swing music, a trend of jazz in vogue at that time. It is known as the space for the liberation of a population oppressed by society and racism. This culture has been preserved and transmitted, spectators will be able to appreciate its dance.
Three musicians who match the dancers
These performances will be accompanied by three musicians: Matthieu Allemandou on vocals and saxophone, Thierry Ollé on keyboards and Pierre Costes on drums.
All three, having passed through the conservatory, have joined numerous professional training courses and collaborated with big names in music and jazz.
Their business card can only be a guarantee of the quality of this evening meeting the deep south of America.
