Fog and headlights trigger large-scale operations at Cologne Cathedral

Alarm at the Cologne fire brigade: A resident had reported smoke development at Cologne Cathedral. However, the fire turned out to be a spotlight in the fog that looked like a fire.

A seemingly dramatic cloud of smoke led to a large-scale deployment of the fire department at Cologne Cathedral on Friday morning. A resident had reported smoke development on the south tower of the cathedral, as the fire department announced.

Almost 40 fire engines and rescue vehicles as well as 100 emergency services from all over the city rushed to the landmark of Cologne. After an extensive investigation, the all-clear was given after 45 minutes. Apparently the deep fog and rain were illuminated by the cathedral lighting right at the top of the cathedral.

From below it looked like smoke on the tower. Curious: almost exactly a year earlier, fog in the cathedral light had caused similar excitement. (dpa; Photo: imago images / Manngold)
